About Therapy at Makahala Hepburn

Therapy isn’t just about talking.

It’s about transforming how you experience yourself, your relationships, and your life. You’re here because something in you knows it’s time for a change.

You’ve been carrying emotional pain for longer than you can remember. To offset the pain, you keep pushing it down, distracting yourself, and handling it alone. But it keeps showing up – in your body, thoughts, and emotions. And it’s disconnecting you from the people you love and the life you deserve.

Therapy is not about “fixing” you either because you were never broken.

It’s about helping you unlearn survival patterns, process unresolved pain, and step into a more authentic, grounded version of yourself.

2400596413Through therapy, you have much to gain.

Therapy provides clarity about what’s been holding you back. You can understand why you feel the way you do and connect the dots around patterns that have kept you stuck.

Nervous system regulation and emotional balance are enhanced, allowing you to move beyond surface-level coping strategies to more profound healing to feel safe, calm, and in control.

Developing connections with others and developing meaningful relationships becomes easier. You can also learn how to break unhealthy cycles and communicate in ways that foster closeness instead of conflict.

Enhanced self-trust and confidence will help you release self-doubt, heal past wounds, and step into your life with clarity and conviction.

2152051357Therapy isn’t always easy.

But you don’t have to do it alone. I’ll support you through every step of your transformation.

My style is warm and direct. You’ll feel safe but challenged because real change happens outside our comfort zones.

We won’t just sit and talk about what’s wrong. We’ll work together to heal at the root level, using evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches that go beyond symptom management.

These approaches include:

  • Somatic Experiencing (SE) – Release stored trauma from your body and rewire your nervous system for calm and resilience.
  • EMDR Therapy – Reprocess painful memories so they no longer control your present.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Heal and integrate the parts of you that feel stuck, anxious, or overwhelmed.
  • Relational Life Therapy (RLT) – Break toxic relationship cycles and rebuild intimacy and trust.
  • Compassionate Inquiry – Explore the emotional wounds keeping you in old patterns and begin to move forward.

My approach blends these powerful modalities into a process customized for your unique needs – so healing feels structured and intuitive.

Let’s do more than understand your problems.

Let’s shift those problems together.

Our work will combine insight, nervous system healing, and real-world change.

You’ve come this far. Now, take the next step.

About Makahala Hepburn, LCSW

About HeadshotWhat makes us who we are is fascinating to me.

That’s why I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and committed myself to understanding how we carry our life experiences – in our bodies, relationships, and everyday choices. I’ve spent the past 20+ years helping people move out of survival mode and into lives that feel grounded, whole, and indeed their own.

My approach is deeply compassionate, direct, and rooted in the belief that healing is possible for everyone – no matter how long you’ve felt stuck.

I specialize in working with high-achieving adults and couples who feel like they “should” have it all together but are still struggling. They often carry unresolved trauma, anxiety, and emotional pain that’s affecting their relationships and day-to-day life.

If that sounds like you, know this: you’re not alone, and it’s not too late to feel differently. You can create the kind of inner peace and connection that once felt out of reach.

When I’m not in session,

you’ll probably find me curled up with a good book, spending time with my dog, or exploring new ways to bring creativity into my life, whether through new recipes, listening to music that speaks to the soul, or taking in the beauty of nature.

I believe in balance, finding joy in the small things, and practicing the self-compassion I encourage my clients to cultivate.
